Hickory police seek driver who left injured passenger after wreck

A 44-year-old Hickory man was left at the scene of a car crash with critical injuries, and police are looking for information about the driver.

Erik Boyles was a passenger in a 2014 Kia Soul early Sunday, when the vehicle struck a utility pole on 17th Street near Main Avenue NW. Boyles was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver left the scene in the car, parked it behind a residence and fled on foot, according to a report from the Hickory Police Department.

Two unidentified people arrived at the scene and took Boyles to Frye Regional Medical Center. An off-duty officer there notified police about the crash.

Boyles has been transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Officials there declined to provide information about his condition.

Anyone having information about the wreck is asked to contact the Hickory Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit at 828-328-5551.
