Charlotte woman dies after leap from Elk River Falls
A 26-year-old Charlotte woman died Sunday after leaping from the top of Elk River Falls, according to The Avery Journal-Times.
Her name has not yet been released. Sheriff Kevin Frye told the Journal-Times that authorities were not sure whether she drowned or hit something while entering the water.
The 60-foot waterfall is a popular attraction for daredevils. Numerous YouTube videos show people jumping from the top to the pool of water below. But the spot has also claimed lives regularly.
A Wake County man died after falling from the top in 2010. Three years earlier, a Tennessee boy was killed while swimming near the base of the falls.
