Uptown Charlotte, Matthews in path of severe thunderstorms
The National Weather Service said just after 9 p.m. Tuesday that severe thunderstorms are possible in Uptown Charlotte, Mint Hill and Matthews among other places until 9:45 p.m..
Duke Energy reported more than 9,000 customers without power at almost 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The weather service had issued a flash flood warning for southern Mecklenburg County and central Union County until 7:30 p.m..
About 4:30 p.m., the weather service said torrential rain is expected to hit the southern parts of Mecklenburg and Union Counties. It said rain could fall at the rate of 3 inches per hour accompanied by wind gusts of 40 miles per hour or more.
At about 3:30 p.m. two thunderstorms were north of Charlotte and heading southeast at about 20 miles per hour. One, with penny-size hail, was between Huntersville and Cornelius; the other was near Lincolnton.
