Uptown neighborhood guide: Charlotte’s city center, with four wards
Welcome to Uptown, the center of Charlotte. Home to over 20,000 people, Uptown offers diverse attractions and housing, creating a unique community worth visiting.
This rapidly growing neighborhood is constantly offering new approaches to education, events and more.
Why it’s called Uptown?
So is it called uptown or downtown?
The center neighborhood of Charlotte has always had speculation regarding its name.
Uptown Charlotte’s name originated from the 1700s, when it was a key trading path for Native American tribes.
These areas were known to be very elevated and rugged.
As the city continued to grow, people began referring to the area as downtown— Mainly because the area is geographically set in the downtown area of the city.
In the late 1970s, Charlotte city council members officially ended the controversy and named the flourishing business area “Uptown.”
Today, Uptown is the heartbeat of Charlotte, creating a melting pot of arts, banking and education— split into 4 four distinct wards, appropriately named first, second, third and fourth
Who lives in Uptown?
As Uptown Charlotte continues to thrive, it’s also beginning to diversify.
Over half of the Uptown population is white, with black and brown individuals making up almost 30% of the population.
The largest age demographic ranges broadly between 18 and 34, while people 55 and up make up less than 15% of the neighborhood’s population.
