Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall early Sunday morning and is moving through the Carolinas with rain and moderate winds expected east of Charlotte and dry conditions expected in westernf North Carolina.

The storm made landfall close to Litchfield Beach, South Carolina July 6 at 4 a.m. and was moving inland when rain and winds weakened, the Sun News previously reported.

As of Sunday morning, Chantal’s maximum winds hit 40 mph and it was moving north at 8 mph. Showers are expected for the Charlotte area most of Sunday with a chance of thunderstorms at night. Chance of precipitation is 80%, the weather service said.

According the National Hurricane Center, “additional weakening is expected as Chantal moves inland.”

Some forecasters said the tropical storm — the third storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season — could weaken to a tropical depression later Sunday.

There is a small chance thunderstorms could push further west and reach the I-77 corridor, the weather service said.

Central and eastern North Carolina and northern coastal South Carolina could see between 2 and 4 inches of rain. The heaviest rainfall, between 4 and 8 inches, is forecast to be felt between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, according to Newsweek.

A Tropical Storm Warning is still in effect for areas between South Santee River, SC and Surf City, NC.

Chantal is expected to produce “life-threatening surf and rip currents” along the coasts of the Carolinas, the hurricane center said earlier this week.
