For the second time in seven days, a teen has died while swimming in Lake Norman northwest of Charlotte, searchers say.
The latest incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. Thursday, July 17, off Catalina Drive near Mooresville, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
“When the deputies arrived on the scene, they learned that a 16-year-old male juvenile had been swimming in Lake .Norman and had not returned,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol ... used sonar equipment and our Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in the search. ... At approximately 6:43 p.m., the body of the 16-year-old, Kaleb Lamar Shields, was located underwater.”
A fundraising campaign for funeral expenses reports the teen and his sister were attending a birthday party at the lake when he died.
His death follows the July 9 drowning of 14-year-old Angel Ernesto Carabello, who went missing in the lake near Stutts Road area of Mooresville, the sheriff’s office says. His body was found with the help of a Remotely Operated Vehicle, officials said.
