Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson will visit Charlotte next month

The first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and the first Black mayor of Charlotte will have a conversation with each other next month.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Harvey B. Gantt will discuss Jackson’s memoir “Lovely One” at the Carolina Theatre.

This event, open to the public, will be the first Harvey B. Gantt Center presentation at the theater since its renovation. The venue reopened in March.

“Lovely One” was released Sept. 3, 2024 and traces Jackson’s “family’s ascent from segregation to her confirmation on America’s highest court within the span of one generation,” according to Random House Publishing Group.

“It’s an honor to have a Supreme Court justice come out and speak to the community and for the community to be able to hear directly from a Supreme Court justice which doesn’t happen very often,” Ingrid James, director of marketing and communications for the center said.

Jackson has shared critiques on government during a recent appearance. Thursday, July 10 during a luncheon with the Indianapolis Bar Association someone asked what keeps Jackson up at night.

“I would say the state of our democracy,” she responded, as reported by CNN.

Also, the Harvard University alumna wrote a letter of dissent July 8 towards the courts approval of the White House’s decision to continue reducing the size of federal government.

“For some reason, this Court sees fit to step in now and release the President’s wrecking ball at the outset of this litigation,” she wrote. “In my view, this decision is not only truly unfortunate but also hubristic and senseless.”
