3 children, teenager among 6 dead in wreck on Interstate 485 in Mecklenburg County
Three children, a teenager and two adults died in a wreck on Interstate 485 Outer Loop in Charlotte on Saturday, a State Highway Patrol trooper said Sunday.
A Honda CR-V driver switching lanes collided with a Chrysler van driver at 11:07 a.m. between Wilkinson Boulevard and West Boulevard in Mecklenburg County, Master Trooper Robert Rogers said in an emailed statement. The collision sent the vehicles off the right side of the highway into a parked tractor-trailer, Rogers said.
Killed were the CR-V driver, 16-year-old Logan Paul Sauer of Mooresville; the 27-year-old van driver, Samuel Jacob Holmes; and van occupants Taylor Willis, 23; Brynlyn Holmes, 1; Addyson Holmes, 3; and Kamron Wood, 8, Rogers said.
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this horrific incident,” MEDIC officials said on social media site X.
The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured, the trooper said.
The hometowns of the van occupants weren’t immediately known.
The six were pronounced dead at the scene, and the hospitalized teen had non-life threatening injuries, according to MEDIC.
Sauer was in the middle lane when he traveled into the right lane and collided with the van, Rogers said.
The investigation continues, although no charges are expected to be filed, he said.
The wreck closed the interstate, with all lanes reopening just after 5:30 p.m., state highway officials said.
