Fort Mill police to provide traffic safety at 5 schools, district officials say
Fort Mill police will provide traffic enforcement at five schools to improve safety during the first two weeks of the new school year, town officials said Saturday night.
Officers will help with traffic flow and direct vehicles during morning dropoff and afternoon pickup at Catawba Ridge High, Fort Mill Middle and Fort Mill, River Trail and Riverview Elementary schools.
The schools have time-based, right-turn restrictions in place for vehicles leaving campus, officials said.
District warned parents of ‘’significant” changes
Saturday’s announcement followed a warning to parents by the Fort Mill School District to prepare for significant traffic safety changes because of a lack of traffic guards, The Herald reported.
The usual third-party vendor won’t provide traffic guards to the district this year, according to an email to parents Wednesday. The district used traffic guards from Charlotte-based Cross Safe for several years, according to The Herald.
The message riled parents, who said traffic is already bad during school hours.
Last year, a driver struck and killed crossing guard Stanley Brucker as he worked in front of Fort Mill Elementary and Fort Mill Middle schools.
“At the end of the day, the safety of our community members is paramount,” Fort Mill Mayor Guynn Savage said in a statement Saturday.
“I commend our police officers for their proactive involvement,” the mayor said. “And I appreciate the ongoing collaboration with the Fort Mill School District and our local legislators, David Martin and Michael Johnson, as we work toward long-term solutions.”
