1 dead, 1 hospitalized in I-277 wreck near uptown Charlotte, MEDIC says

A person died and another was hospitalized in a wreck on West John Belk Freeway (Interstate 277 Outer Loop) near Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte early Saturday, MEDIC reported.

On social media site X, MEDIC said its paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene around 3:30 a.m. and took the other person to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries.

The crash happened at exit 1 to South Mint Street, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. I-277 was closed for hours past the exit just west of uptown.

The highway reopened around 7 a.m., after troopers completed their on-scene investigation, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The cause of the wreck wasn’t immediately available from the State Highway Patrol.
