The body of a swimmer reported missing on Mountain Island Lake Thursday night was recovered Friday, the Huntersville Fire Department said.

Searchers returned to the lake Friday morning “and were able to bring closure to the family and friends of the victim,” Huntersville fire officials said on social media site X.

Emergency officials haven’t released the person’s name and age or further details about what happened, including whether anyone was with the person.

Searchers on a Huntersville Fire Department fire boat helped Gaston County crews at the scene just before 8:30 p.m., according to the Huntersville department.

The area is near Duke Access Road on the Gaston County side of the lake, WBTV reported.

“We appreciate the support of the boating community last night and again this morning while we worked,” according to the Huntersville Fire Department statement on X.

Mountain Island Lake is in Gaston, Mecklenburg, and Lincoln counties and provides drinking water to Charlotte, Gastonia and other communities.

This is a developing story.
