1 rescued from 3rd-story apartment fire
Charlotte firefighters rescued Monday morning one person from a third-floor apartment on Wallace Road in east Charlotte.
Three to six units were involved, and the fire was under control by 11 a.m., according to Charlotte Fire Department.
CFD said the fire started after someone left a candle unattended on a third-floor balcony and the flames spread. The damage is estimated at $75,000, according to the fire department.
Four units in the complex are now unlivable, which displaces 21 people – 10 adults and 11 children, said Jennifer Franklin, regional communications director for the Western North Carolina division of the American Red Cross.
Franklin said the apartment complex has open units that the families will be able to stay in starting Monday night.
Around 10 a.m., heavy smoke and fire could be seen at the building, off outbound Independence Boulevard between Conference Drive and Harris Boulevard.
No injuries were reported. More than 40 firefighters were on the scene and controlled the fire in 16 minutes, according to the fire department.
