Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a man with assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon following a pursuit that reportedly closed part of Interstate 85 southbound Monday.

Jaquan Carter, 34, was arrested Monday night. CMPD responded to reports of shots fired at about 10:30 a.m. Monday on Statesville Road. Police said two people had fought and one person began shooting.

Bullets struck unoccupied vehicles in the area and the suspect fled in a vehicle at a high rate of speed, according to police.

CMPD said officers received reports of an assault with a deadly weapon a little more than a mile down the road and learned that the suspect had gotten in accident and then fired a gun. He fled on foot, the police said. No one was hurt.

The firearm believed to have been fired was found in a wooded area by CMPD’s K9 unit, police said.

Police said evidence led them to Carter and more charges may be forthcoming.
