The gift of giving has no age limit. Students at a Charlotte area charter school are hoping they can raise enough money to donate to a local nonprofit in December to prove that.

Students in the Young Moguls club at the A.C.E. Academy Charter School are hoping to raise $5,000 to buy non-perishable food items that will be given out by Block Love CLT to people experiencing homelessness in Charlotte.

“It is important to teach our Young Moguls at a young age that a large part of entrepreneurship is supporting your community and giving back to those that are not as fortunate as they are,” said Shawn Smalls, co-founder and director of the Young Moguls Club. “Giving Tuesday is a perfect way to bring awareness to some of the issues affecting our neighbors in the current economy. It takes a village to raise a child, but we also have to care for the village that raises the child.”

Entrepreneurship is an academic focus at ACE Academy, which is located in Harrisburg, and the Young Moguls club puts that education into practice, a press release said.

Students in the club are asking for $5 donations from the community to help put together small gift boxes on Giving Tuesday this year. The gift boxes will have non-perishable food items, thank you notes and handmade crafts, and gift cards. Students are aiming to pack at least 40 boxes on Dec. 12.

The boxes will be distributed to people by Block Love CLT, a nonprofit that works with people experiencing homelessness by distributing food.

“It warms my heart that A.C.E. Academy has selected our organization and neighbors to support. It speaks volumes of the young people and their acts of kindness,” said Deborah Phillips, executive director of Block Love CLT. “We are experiencing tough times right now and the food basket donations are very appreciated. The baskets will help our population tremendously in these uncertain times.”

The club will be accepting donations between Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Those interested in supporting the students can donate by visiting the A.C.E Academy website.
