Major improvements are scheduled to begin next month to a chronically bottlenecked Lake Norman intersection, state highway officials said Wednesday.

The $21 million project off Interstate 77 Exit 28 in Cornelius is intended to reduce wrecks and congestion, according to an N.C. Department of Transportation news release. The work is expected to take 2 ½ years, officials said.

Drivers turning left off Liverpool Parkway and Torrence Chapel Road near the exit will be funneled to roundabouts being built north and south of West Catawba Avenue, according to NCDOT.

Crews with Ohio contractor KWest Group LLC also will add a roundabout at the Knox Road/Torrence Chapel Road intersection. Knox Road will be realigned to connect with the traffic signal at West Catawba Avenue and One Norman Boulevard.

According to its contract with the state, KWest can start construction on Jan. 5.

“All work except landscaping and vegetation establishment should be completed in the spring of 2028,” according to the NCDOT statement.
