Charlotte area school districts are beginning to announce cancellations — only weekend activities so far — as a result of winter weather hitting the area this weekend.
A winter storm is expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that’s prompted a rare ice storm warning across the area. Some areas near Charlotte could receive more than three-quarters of an inch of ice, the National Weather Service said Friday.
Duke Energy says just a quarter inch of ice is enough to bring down trees and branches onto power lines. A half-inch of ice can weigh down the lines themselves.
Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to dip into the single digits Monday, and lows could remain below freezing until late next week. That means precipitation that falls could stick around on the ground for days after it falls.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Friday the district canceled all weekend field trips, athletic events and community activities at schools due the impending storm. The district said it will monitor weather conditions throughout the weekend and “alert of any further schedule changes.” It hasn’t announced any changes for Monday classes.
