Federal officials are trying to determine if a small plane crash at a Monroe airport Monday afternoon needs to be investigated further.

The single-engine piston airplane crashed after overturning while attempting to land at the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport at 1:35 p.m., said Monroe spokesperson Jason Puckett.

All three passengers onboard the aircraft were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in an email that it would determine if an investigation was needed after the Federal Aviation Administration finished documenting and assessing the crash.

The FAA closed the airport’s runway Monday afternoon to assess the scene. It reopened at 4 p.m., Puckett said. The airport mainly handles corporate aircraft, the city’s website said.

A news release from the city said the plane ended up on its back about 200 to 300 feet away from the runway when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The plane was coming from Wilmington, Puckett said. The registered owner of the aircraft is Tideline Aviation LLC in Wilmington, according to the FAA’s registry.
