CMS announces decision on closure as storm front heads to Charlotte area
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools is one of multiple school districts that have cancelled classes on Monday, March 16, due a storm front crossing the region.
York County, Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and Clover school districts in York County will also be closed for the day, along with the Lancaster County schools district.
The Cabarrus County Schools announced it will implement a Remote Learning Day Monday.
“After closely monitoring weather conditions and in coordination with local and state officials, all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) will be closed for students on Monday,” CMS officials said in a news release.
“Because this instructional day is waived by the Superintendent, we will not be using a designated make-up instructional day on the 2025-26 academic calendar.”
The closure also means:
- All before-school and after-school programs (BSEP and ASEP) are canceled.
- All Community Use of Schools activities are canceled.
- Athletic events and extracurricular activities will be rescheduled. Updated dates will be shared as soon as possible.
“We will continue to monitor National Weather Service updates and keep families informed of any district or school schedule changes through the CMS website, on social media, and via ParentSquare (email, text, and phone call), if necessary,” CMS officials said.
The region is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11 a.m. Monday.
There is a 90% chance of seeing a showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m., forecasters say.
Winds will be 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, forecasters say.
