4 Waxhaw traffic projects that could ease traffic in fast-growing Union County town
As a growing Waxhaw sees more congestion on the town’s roads, upcoming traffic projects have the potential to smooth out daily commutes.
Waxhaw’s population has doubled in size over the past decade from nearly 10,000 in 2010 to more than 20,000 in 2020. Two-lane roads dominate the road infrastructure as thousands drive in and out on their daily commutes.
The Charlotte Observer previously reported on a major traffic update coming to downtown Waxhaw by 2030 that is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. But the town has several other projects on the horizon.
Here are the road projects coming expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to estimates from the town.
Kensington Road
Kensington Road will be widened between Providence Road and Connels Point Avenue to improve eastern and western mobility. This is the corridor near Harris Teeter, CVS and Forrest Hill Church.
The project will also add turn lanes, access control measures and pedestrian improvements.
The estimation completion for this project is late 2026.
Milbridge Parkway and Kensington Road
A traffic signal will be installed at the Kensington entrance of the Millbridge subdivision – one of Waxhaw’s largest housing developments.
Millbridge has more than 2,200 single family homes across 920 acres. Traffic to enter and exit the subdivision is often congested during rush hour.
In addition to the traffic signal, the project will come with pedestrian improvement and warning beacons.
The estimation completion for this project is late 2026.
Pine Oak Road and Waxhaw-Marvin Road
A traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of Pine Oak Road & Waxhaw-Marvin Road.
The project, done in collaboration with the town of Waxhaw and a developer, will also have a road realignment and added turn lanes.
Construction is intended to start this summer to be completed later in the year.
NC 16 and Bonds Grove Road traffic Signal
A traffic signal is coming to the often congested intersection of Providence Road and Bonds Grove Road. In addition to the traffic signal, the project will also add a left turn lane.
This project is being led by NCDOT in collaboration with the town of Waxhaw. Construction will begin this summer and is expected to be completed late 2026.
