A motorcyclist died in a head-on crash on a rural Iredell County road Friday night, a State Highway Patrol trooper said.

Michael Alan Gandy, 57, of Statesville, died at the scene after a 17-year-old SUV driver suspected of speeding crossed the center line and hit him, Trooper Jake Macchia said in a news release.

The crash happened on Whites Farm Road near Ingram Road around 8:20 p.m., Macchia said. The intersection is about eight miles north of downtown Statesville.

Troopers will discuss charges against the teen with Iredell County prosecutors, Macchia said. The teen wasn’t injured, he said.
