NCDOT to expand chronically bottlenecked Lake Norman road, add sidewalks
The state is scheduled to choose a contractor and begin widening a chronically congested stretch of Williamson Road near Lake Norman this fall, a Mooresville official told the town Board of Commissioners this week.
North Carolina Department of Transportation will award a contract for the stretch from Brawley School Road to N.C. 150, Mooresville Water Resources Director Kevin Blayton said.
A contract will be awarded in 2027 for the other part of the road, from Brawley School Road to Interstate 77 exit 33 at the lake, Blayton said.
Thel $52.6 million project will expand all of Williamson to four lanes and include a median and sidewalks, according to the state’s plans.
NCDOT aims to reduce congestion and make the road safer for drivers and pedestrians, the plans show.
Utility relocations
Blayton updated commissioners on the project after Town Manager Tracey Jerome said the town received calls about what appeared to be construction on Williamson Road along the stretch from Brawley School Road to exit 33.
“You will see, if you travel on Williamson now, there’s been a lot of activity there,” Jerome told the board. “It’s NCDOT. They’re doing utility relocations there.”
Duke Energy and other companies are moving utilities away from the road for the expansion, Blayton said.
It wasn’t immediately known when work on both stretches will finish. The Charlotte Observer has reached out to NCDOT for an update.
N.C. 150 is being expanded under a separate, $249 million project that will see 10 lanes at a revamped I-77 exit 36.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
