An estimated 200 gallons of sewage spewed into Lake Norman after a pipe failure Tuesday, Charlotte Water reported.

The overflow occurred in the 17000 block of Belle Isle Drive, according to a Charlotte Water news release.

Its crews responded quickly to the failure, preventing more sewage from spilling into the lake, department officials said.

Most homes along the lake are served by low-pressure sewer systems that convey waste to a gravity-fed sewer to Charlotte Water’s wastewater treatment plants, spokesperson Cam Coley said in the release.

It was unknown Tuesday night why the pipe failed.
