Ceiling collapse at Roof Above disrupts services after severe storm
Severe weather Monday night caused the collapse of Roof Above’s main dining room ceiling, which will be closed for the foreseeable future.
Roof Above is a nonprofit that supports those experiencing homelessness in Charlotte through emergency shelters, permanent housing and services such as street outreach and day services. Roof Above spokesperson Eleanor Hatcher said the roof collapse occurred in the nonprofit’s Hub building.
Facilities such as laundry and showers are also located in The Hub, and it acts as a primary services building for many volunteers and clients just outside of uptown on North College Street.
No one was injured in the storm, according to a news release from Friends of Roof Above. Thunderstorms rolled into Charlotte, with lightning and heavy rain amid the ongoing drought.
Roof Above also serves lunch to 300 people or more per day. They’re also known to offer medical support, access to landlines and ID clinics. Roof Above is in the process of moving those services to their Day Services Center site known as the Depot next door to The Hub.
Laundry and shower services also will be paused, but Roof Above plans to provide alternatives, Hatcher said.
