Charlotte traffic: Wreck involving police car shuts Independence at Sharon Amity

A wreck involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police car and a sport utility vehicle closed inbound East Independence Boulevard at North Sharon Amity Road Thursday afternoon.

The wreck happened about 12:45 p.m., CMPD Officer Jessica Wallin said.

The driver of the SUV was pinned in and was taken by Medic to the hospital with unknown injuries, Wallin said. The officer was shaken but not injured, she said.

The initial investigation indicates the officer was traveling inbound on Independence when the driver of the SUV, who was traveling outbound, attempted to make an illegal left turn onto North Sharon Amity. The SUV was t-boned by the officer’s vehicle, Wallin said.

Three other occupants of the SUV were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The SUV driver was cited for an illegal left turn.

Two of SUV’s other occupants also were cited, one for possession of drug paraphernalia and the other for having an open container of alcohol.
