1 dead in wreck near Carolina Place Mall in Pineville
Pineville police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a motorist who died in a fiery single-vehicle wreck near Carolina Place Mall early Tuesday.
The unknown male was driving a four-door white Kia Sportage with an Illinois license plate when the vehicle crashed in the 9900 block of Leitner Drive, off Pineville-Matthews Road, police said. The wreck happened about 12:30 a.m.
“We are working in conjunction with the Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine a potential cause of the crash and to learn the identity of the driver,” police Lt. S.C. Copley said in a news release.
“We are following up leads and tracking down any possible security camera footage from surrounding businesses in the area,” Copley added.
Police ask that anyone who knows someone who drives such a vehicle and to whom they haven’t spoken since early this morning call 704-889-2231.
The car was charred, wedged up against a tree later in the morning, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.
Leitner Drive was closed through the morning rush hour as police investigated the wreck.
