A runaway tortoise prompted a “slow-speed” police pursuit in an east Charlotte neighborhood.

The tortoise escaped from its home on Ivey Drive, prompting “a slow-speed pursuit,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a tongue-in-cheek post on its Facebook page.

The African Spurred Tortoise weighs about 50 pounds, according to WBTV.

“Eastway Division Officer Todd Watson and Animal Control Officer Margaret Pollard found the fugitive tortoise making his getaway down the street and brought it home to its owner,” CMPD said.
