A 78-year-old homeless man who was severely beaten with a brick on July 6 in Gastonia has died.

Fletcher Harold Campbell was attacked in the 1500 block of West Garrison Boulevard and suffered multiple broken facial bones.

Campbell had been cared for most recently at Wendover Hospice in Shelby, according to Donna Lahser of the Gastonia Police Department.

Gastonia Police arrested Donald Ray Wallace, then 19, in connection with the attack. Wallace is accused of hitting Campbell in the face with a brick after pushing him down.

Wallace’s mother told Gaston County District Judge Richard Abernethy that Wallace was off of his medication. The judge set a $500,000 bond on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.

The district attorney will likely consider additional charges against Wallace, Lahser said.
