Fatal wreck on I-40 west in Catawba County

Interstate 40 westbound in western Iredell County is closed as police investigate a fatal motorcycle wreck in neighboring Catawba County.

The wreck happened about 10:30 a.m. near Oxford School Road, Exit 138.

State highway officials are warning of major delays and urging motorists to seek alternate routes.

It could take until 7 p.m. to clear the scene, the state Department of Transportation said Thursday afternoon.

Earlier Thursday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to an injury wreck on I-85 southbound at northbound I-77.

And about 2 a.m. Thursday, police charged a woman with driving while impaired after her car struck a highway sign at the on-ramp of I-77 northbound near Arrowood Road, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

In other traffic news, these interstate ramps will be closed for pavement repairs:

▪ From 9 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, the ramp from Statesville Avenue to I-85 North. The right two lanes of I-85 North also will be closed during those times.

▪ From 11 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, the ramp from I-77 North to N.C. 16 (Exit 11B).
