Showers to persist into Saturday in Charlotte area
Showers are expected to persist into Saturday in the Charlotte region, bringing relief to drought-stricken areas but concerns about flooding in some parts of the Piedmont and mountains.
Up to an inch of rain could fall at Charlotte Douglas International Airport by Friday night and another quarter-inch Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C.
The conditions appear to have led to a slew of wrecks in Charlotte even before Friday morning’s commute, although there have been no reports of flash flooding.
The storm system has been far more severe elsewhere, including at the Carolinas coast, where the National Weather Service is investigating reports of a tornado having touched down in Charleston overnight.
The chance of rain in the Charlotte area stands at 70 percent into Saturday before diminishing to a 40 percent chance Saturday night and 30 percent chance Sunday.
Highs are expected to stay at an unseasonably cool 70 degrees Friday and Saturday before climbing to 73 Sunday and 77 Monday. The normal high for the first days of fall in Charlotte is 79.
