Nine hospitalized from fumes at Mint Hill medical plaza
Medic took nine patients with non-life threatening injuries to local hospitals on Friday after a call of fumes at a Mint Hill medical plaza in the 10500 block of Blair Road.
The call came in shortly before 11:30 a.m., and multiple emergency crews responded. Medic brought a mass casualty bus to the scene.
A contract worker was doing maintenance on the third floor of Carolinas HealthCare System Mint Hill Medical Plaza and was using a lubricant that gave off fumes affecting 10 employees in Carolinas HealthCare System’s regional call center on the same floor, Carolinas HealthCare System said in a statement at 5:15 p.m. Friday.
“Those employees were assessed on site, and nine were transported to Carolinas HealthCare System University and Carolinas Medical Center for further observation,” the statement said. “Initial assessments are that the reactions to the fumes are minor.
“The Mint Hill Fire Department has determined the building to be safe.”
The call center and University Pediatrics, both on the same floor, did not reopen Friday. Charlotte Medical Clinic and the urgent care center were unaffected and continued to see patients, the statement said.
