CMPD detective hurt in wreck that closed two lanes on I-485 near I-77
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detective suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday night in a three-vehicle wreck that closed two eastbound lanes on the Interstate 485 Outer Loop for several hours.
Police said the on-duty detective was thrown from his unmarked police SUV about 7:12 p.m. and was found lying on the road when Medic arrived at mile marker 67 between Interstate 77 and Nations Ford Road. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, and police say he was in stable condition.
The early investigation shows the officer lost control of his vehicle on the wet road. It veered off the interstate to the left, struck a median wall, then rolled over and ejected the detective. The driver of a second vehicle saw the rolled SUV and stopped in the left lane. After it was hit by a third vehicle, the driver of the second vehicle was taken to CMC-Pineville hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
CMPD’s Major Crash Unit is determining whether wet conditions played a role.
