A state lab has confirmed rabies in a raccoon that a resident shot and killed Sunday in a Maiden yard.
The raccoon was the seventh confirmed case of rabies in the county this year.
After the raccoon was shot, the family’s dog jumped a fence, attacked the raccoon and began carrying its body around before people got it away from the dog, Catawba County Animal Services officials said.
The dog, which wasn’t current on the rabies vaccination, was brought to the Catawba County Animal Shelter and placed in quarantine.
