Changes aim to cut congestion at Matthews intersection
Changes have been made to reduce congestion at U.S. 74 and Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Matthews, town officials announced Wednesday.
The intersection became congested when motorists waited to make legal U-turns on U.S. 74.
As of Tuesday, protected right-turn signals have been removed from three approaches to the intersection, except for the approach from U.S. 74 West to turn right onto Matthews-Mint Hill Road, continuing toward Butler High.
Motorists approaching the intersection can turn right on red only when traffic is clear, and U-turn traffic on U.S. 74 will have the right-of-way.
Matthews police and state highway workers will monitor the intersection as motorists get accustomed to the changes.
