Though winds on Saturday delayed the launch of more than 50 hot-air balloons during the 42nd annual Carolina BalloonFest at the Statesville Regional Airport, thousands flocked to the event to enjoy the bright autumn weather, many taking “selfies” as the balloons were inflated.

Waiting for the launch, 9-year-old Ethan Smith of the Avery County town of Crossnore blew bubbles to check the wind. The festival continues Sunday. You can park and take a free shuttle to the event at: Iredell County Fairgrounds, 630 N. Main St. in Troutman or West Iredell School, 213 Warrior Drive, in Statesville.
