South Charlotte auto wreck kills teen
A 16-year-old boy died Sunday after the vehicle in which he was riding hit a tree in south Charlotte.
Alexander Mundt was in the back seat when the Toyota Highlander he was riding in veered off the road shortly after midnight in the 5000 block of Colony Road near Sharon View Road, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
The 17-year-old driver, Abigail Mcgaha, and another passenger, Hannah Greene, 17, were in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center, authorities said.
Police said the vehicle was moving at high speed when it left the roadway on the right, then veered left and slid across the northbound lanes of traffic on Colony Road. The SUV went off the street again before colliding with the tree.
Police did not say if the driver was charged.
