Wreck shuts down I-77 North near uptown
Two lanes of Interstate 77 North were closed late Sunday as troopers investigated a wreck just south of the John Belk Freeway that left at least one person dead.
The collision happened just after 8 p.m. The N.C. Highway Patrol said one person died but did not release details about what caused the crash or the conditions of the other people involved.
The N.C. Department of Transportation indicated that the wreck wouldn’t be cleared up until midnight, but crews could be seen loading a damaged SUV onto the back of a tow truck around 10 p.m.
Traffic was backed up on the northbound side of I-77 to the South Carolina border, according to N.C. DOT, which recommended using Interstate 485 to Interstate 85 as a detour.
The wreck threatened to worsen traffic congestion at the end of the Carolina Panthers game at nearby Bank of America Stadium.
