Man dies of injuries from Freedom Drive wreck
An 89-year-old man injured in a rush-hour wreck on Freedom Drive earlier this week has died.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Walter Porter Jr. was attempting to make a left turn Monday onto Freedom from Thriftwood Drive when he drove into the path of a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer.
The driver of the Blazer, whom police identified as Leslie Bryant-Harris, applied her brakes but was unable to avoid a collision that flipped Porter’s vehicle onto its side, according to CMPD.
Porter was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and died Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Speed was a factor in the crash, according to CMPD, although the report does not say which driver might have been speeding.
Bryant-Harris was charged with a violation because one child was not in an appropriate child restraint seat, although occupants of both vehicles were wearing seat belts, according to CMPD’s report. She and her passengers were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
