A man has died after being struck by an SUV on the Outer Loop of Interstate 485 near I-77 in south Charlotte as rain blanketed the area early Monday and made travel and visibility more challenging.
The man crashed into the median and was struck when he got out of his pickup, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.
Medic pronounced the man dead at the scene and reported the incident shortly before 7:45 a.m. Congestion was heavy in that area during the morning commute.
Across the region, the rainy weather is causing a mess on area roads. In Matthews, authorities closed Sam Newell Road at Independence Point Parkway because of flooding. There was no timetable on when the road would reopen, Mayor Jim Taylor tweeted shortly before 10 a.m.

Elsewhere, a vehicle was reportedly traveling in the wrong direction earlier Monday on I- 77 south and struck a tractor trailer near LaSalle Street.
The driver was ejected from the vehicle, and three of five lanes on the interstate were shut down after the wreck was reported just before 3 a.m. The driver’s condition was not available.
All lanes have reopened, but congestion is heavy from LaSalle to the John Belk Freeway, according to North Carolina Department of Transportation. Allow extra travel time.
The weather is causing a mess on area roads. Just before 8:30 a.m., police were responding to more than 40 wrecks or road blockages across the city, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department website.
Plus, heavy traffic is expected around Bank of America Stadium later today ahead of the Monday Night Football game featuring the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. Expect some street closures and limited on-street parking as game time nears.
▪ Two of four lanes are closed on I- 85 north near Harris Boulevard after a wreck that was reported at 7:26 a.m. Expect delays in that area.
▪ A severe wreck on I-77 south near Mooresville is blocking the left lane near Exit 33. The wreck was reported at 7:19 a.m. Use caution in the area.
▪ A wreck on South Tryon Street near Carowinds Boulevard is blocking at least one lane in southwest Charlotte.
