About 4,500 gallons of sewage spilled into McIntyre Creek in north Charlotte on Tuesday, Charlotte Water reported. The creek is in the Catawba River watershed.
The spill happened in the 6200 block of McIntyre Ridge Drive, between Beatties Ford Road and Sunset Road.
In a media statement, Charlotte Water did not say what is believed to have caused the spill. Anything put into plumbing or a manhole can clog pipes and cause a sewage overflow, according to the statement.
