Ranlo woman killed in I-85 wreck in Belmont

A Ranlo woman died in a two-vehicle wreck late Monday on Interstate 85 in Belmont, police said.

The wreck happened at about 10:25 p.m. on southbound I-85 between Exit 27 and the Catawba River bridge.

Caryl Michelle Allen, 30, was driving a vehicle believed to have slowed or stopped in the right lane of the interstate while approaching the off-ramp for Exit 27. A second vehicle was merging into the lane for the exit ramp when it struck the first vehicle, police said.

A passenger in Allen’s vehicle and the driver of the other vehicle were injured. Police have not released their names or conditions.

Both vehicles were propelled further down the road. When police arrived, they found the two vehicles 500 feet from the exit ramp.

Police said they’re trying to determine why the vehicle slowed or stopped, and it’s too early to say whether charges are warranted. Police have been unable to interview those injured in the wreck because of their conditions, Belmont Interim Police Chief Basil Marett said.
