Rain floods roads in Union and Stanly counties

Thursday’s overnight showers could continue until late morning in much of the Charlotte region, before skies gradually clear throughout the day.

Rainfall across Mecklenburg County was pretty uniform overnight, with most areas getting between 1.5 and 2 inches.

Heavy rains flooded numerous roads in southern Union County and Stanly County and prompted officials to close the lake in Cane Creek Park to boat traffic. The Union County lake was closed until further notice.

At 8:30 a.m., the state Department of Transportation reported that Howie Road in Union County was closed due to rushing water at the intersection with Porter Road. Howie Road wasn’t expected to reopen until 11 a.m.

Other Union County roads that flooded overnight were Antioch Church Road, between Weddington and Beulah Church roads near Weddington; Baucom Deese Road near Oakdale Road; Howey Bottoms Road near Mill Grove Road; Lawyers Road near New Salem Road; Medlin Road at Macedonia Church Road; North Charlotte Avenue at the railroad underpass in Monroe; Potter Road at Parkwood School Road; Rocky River Road near Doster Road; and Stack Road near Jug Broome Road.

Stanly County roads that flooded were Booger Hollar Road near Albemarle; Bridgeport Road near Albemarle; Flint Ridge Road near Albemarle; Oak Grove Road near Albemarle; Old Cottonville Road near Norwood; Old Mill Road near Albemarle; Sides Road near Albemarle; Gold Branch Road, near Albemarle; and Hill-Ford Road, near Oakboro.

By Thursday night, skies should be mostly clear, according to the National Weather Service in Greer, S.C. Sunny skies are then forecast into at least the middle of next week.

Thursday will remain warm, with an expected high of 73.

Temperatures will then cool, with forecast lows of 37 Friday and Saturday nights, 29 Sunday night and 30 Monday night.

Friday should reach a seasonable high of 62, but highs are then forecast to fall to 57 Saturday, 47 Sunday and 48 Monday.

Highs are expected to rebound to 54 Tuesday and 55 Wednesday.

With Thursday’s deluge, 8.40 inches of rain have fallen in November at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. That’s No. 2 on the all-time list for November in Charlotte.

The November record for Charlotte is 8.68 inches, set in 1985.
