Charlotte turning much colder; snow likely in mountains this weekend

Charlotte will turn much colder this weekend, while people in the North Carolina mountains could see their first snow of the season.

Light accumulations of about a half inch of snow are possible Saturday, generally in areas above 3,500 feet in Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood and Graham counties, according to the National Weather Service office in Greer, S.C.

However, none of the white stuff will approach the Charlotte region.

Charlotte will be colder than normal, and there’s a slight chance of showers Saturday night. But, it won’t be cold enough for snow to form, said Trisha Palmer, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Much of the Charlotte area will see lows in the upper 30s Saturday night, Palmer said. The high could reach 55 degrees, before a 30 percent chance of rain appears at night.

Sunday night could see lows drop to the upper 20s, but the weather front with the chance of moisture will be long gone, Palmer said. Sunny skies and a high of 50 is expected – making for a nice afternoon for fans attending the Carolina Panthers game against Washington at Bank of America Stadium.

Sunshine is expected to stick around at least through Thanksgiving Day.
