James Kim of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education will speak about literacy strategies at a Nov. 30 forum in Charlotte.

His talk comes as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and a coalition of community groups are joining to build reading, writing and communication skills. National and state exams show that reading proficiency remains low for many students, especially those who are black or Hispanic and come from low-income homes.

Kim will talk about best ways to help such students in a talk at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the UNC Charlotte Center City campus, 320 E. Ninth St., with a panel of local experts on hand to field questions about efforts in Mecklenburg County. The talk is sponsored by the UNCC College of Education and Read Charlotte, a recently formed coalition promoting literacy.
