Pedestrian’s death on I-85 in Concord Saturday was a suicide
The death of a pedestrian Saturday night on northbound Interstate 85 in Concord was apparently a suicide.
Davontae Deshon Mchie, 27, was riding in a rented car with his girlfriend when she learned from her father that police had contacted him about Mchie, according to Sgt. Garrett Barger, District 6, N.C. Highway Patrol.
Barger said Mchie had been drinking heavily and began trying to step out of the moving car around 9:57 p.m. near the Poplar Tent Road exit. Mchie said he was tired of running from authorities. He told his girlfriend that if authorities had contacted her father, they would probably soon contact her and find him.
The girlfriend finally pulled over, and Mchie stepped out of the vehicle. Cars swerved around him as he stood on the interstate with his arms outstretched, Barger said. He then lay down on the pavement and was run over by at least two cars, investigators reported.
Mchie had recently moved to Concord and faced a second-degree assault charge in Minnesota, Barger said. He recently failed to make an appearance in Rowan County, Barger said.
He is featured on a Top 10 List for the Marshall Police Department. An arrest warrant for second-degree assault had been issued by the Lyon County District Court.
