100 students get sick at elementary school

At least 100 students were reportedly sick at a Union County elementary school Thursday, according to officials.

The children all attend Antioch Elementary School on Antioch Church Road in Matthews. School officials said the children all reported vomiting and stomach pains.

School Principal Dr. Benfield sent a message to parents informing them of the situation.

“I am calling to let you know that approximately 100 students are ill. Parents are reporting that students are vomiting and have stomach pains. The Union County Health Department has been contacted. In addition, school nurses and county health staff members were at our school today to assess the situation and take test samples,” the message read.

Officials said the Health Department came to the school to take samples. Those results may take about 48 hours to process.

“We are taking this matter very seriously and I will continue to communicate updates in a timely manner,” Benfield wrote to parents. “If your child is sick, please consult a doctor. Also, please remind your child to wash their hands carefully with soap and water on a regular basis. Please be mindful that the health department may contact parents about this matter.”

No further information about the incident has been released.
