Union County authorities plan to clean an elementary school over the weekend after about 100 students fell ill on Thursday.
The health department said it has received several reports of gastrointestinal illnesses involving students at Antioch Elementary near Matthews on Antioch Church Road. An exact cause of the illnesses hasn’t been announced.
The school’s principal said parents reported that their children were vomiting and experiencing stomach pains, according to a letter sent to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.
Authorities are asking parents to keep their students out of school until they are symptom-free for 48 hours. The illnesses are often passed by person-to-person contact, and by touching contaminated surfaces.

Antioch has about 730 students. Many were out-of-school Friday, but exact figures were not immediately available, said Union County school district spokeswoman Tahira Stalberte. She also noted that not all of the absent students are sick.
