Group protests tax hikes on working families

A group of taxpayers outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center on Saturday protested what they call Gov. Pat McCrory’s tax hikes on working families.

The rally, organized by Progress NC Action, a liberal group, aimed to counter McCrory’s statement that he “put more money back in the pockets of hard-working families.”

Speakers included a veteran Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher, a film industry producer and a small-business owner. Also present was Mecklenburg County commissioner Pat Cotham.

Progress NC Action cited numerous measures the group said have made it tougher on people, including DMV fee increases and elimination of child care tax credits and the small-business deduction.

N.C. GOP senior adviser Ricky Diaz countered that since taking office, McCrory “has delivered $4.4 billion in tax relief for families and businesses, and North Carolina’s tax climate is now the most improved in the nation, vaulting from one of the worst to one of the best in national rankings.”
