Rain expected to taper off Tuesday, return Wednesday

A half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain was expected to fall over much of the Charlotte region early Tuesday, resulting in isolated flash flooding.

But the showers are expected to taper off, with mostly cloudy skies and an unseasonable high of 72 forecast, according to the National Weather Service in Greer, S.C.

Rain, however, is expected to move right back into the region on Wednesday, with the weather service calling for a 100-percent chance of showers throughout the day.

Thursday has a 40-percent chance of showers, mainly before 3 p.m.

Rain will then move out of the region, although skies are expected to remain mostly cloudy on New Year's Day, according to the weather service.

Sunshine could finally return over the weekend and remain at least into early next week.

Highs are expected to dip to 67 Wednesday, 63 Thursday and a more seasonable 52 on New Year's Day, 48 Saturday and 50 Sunday.
