Union County commissioners unanimously awarded a nearly $24.4 million construction contract this week for its new Human Services building in Monroe.

Monteith Construction of Wilmington will start work this spring on the building at U.S. 601 and Concord Avenue. Total cost for the project is $42 million, including construction and design, land acquisition and furnishings for the new building.

Work is expected to be completed in fall 2017 at the 30.5-acre site.

The 144,000-square-foot building will house the Division of Social Services, Division of Public Health and the Human Services Administration. Those groups are crammed into 90,000 square feet of leased space at Union Village on U.S. 74 in Monroe.

Montieth was the lowest out of five bidders and came in about $5 million below the county’s construction budget. The Durham office of Perkins and Will is the project architect.
