Child dies in Stanly County house fire
A 3-year-old boy died in a Stanly County house fire Tuesday morning, a source with Stanly County Sheriff's Office said. The mother of the child was injured.
The fire started at a home on Washington Street in Badin about 9:30 a.m.
“The fire was called in to 911 at 9:30 am, first units arrived at 9:37," Stanly County Fire marshal Michael Roark said. “The fire was brought under control at 10:47 am.”
According to neighbors, two parents and three children had moved into the home just five months ago.
“It’s sad. I see them children every day. They be out there playing," said a man who lives across the street. “I just hate it they lost their baby, you know.”
Neighbors believe the two other children were at school when the fire broke out.
The mother was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Neighbors said the parents attempted to save the 3-year-old, Ja’zyion Harris, but were not successful.
“The child was found in the rear of the structure in one of the bedrooms,” Roark added.
Officials have not said what they believe started the fire.
Badin police and the Stanly County Sheriff's Office and Stanly County Fire Marshal are investigating.
